Former Military Interrogator to Cheney: You are Wrong, Torture Cost American Lives

The torturing of Muslim prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay emboldened and inflamed foreign fighters, who arrived in Iraq to join the fight, and made up nearly 90 percent of all suicide bombers, who were responsible for the deaths of American soldiers.

Matthew Alexander, a former military interrogator stationed in Iraq, Air Force reserve officer and a 14-year veteran, says Dick Cheney is dead wrong when he claims torture saved American lives and that Cheney ‘fundamentally misunderstands the way America is viewed around the world.” Alexander says he personally conducted more than 300 interrogations in Iraq and oversaw more than 1,000 and most of the captured foreign fighters said they came to fight against the U.S., because of the torture of Muslims by Americans.

“At the prison where I conducted interrogations,” Alexander said, “we heard day in and day out, foreign fighters who had been captured state that the number one reason that they had come to fight in Iraq was because of torture and abuse…” Seeing pictures and hearing stories of Muslims brutally tortured by Americans put foreign fighters over the edge.
